Concerto Competition
The Concerto Competition is keenly competitive, with judges selecting a single winner each year from all entrants, regardless of age or instrument. The winner receives a certificate for outstanding achievement in music performance, and is eligible and MAY receive an invitation to perform their solo with the Willimantic Orchestra in a 2025 concert, solely at the discretion of the judges.
-
Eligibility: open to all solo and ensemble entrants. Previous concerto winners are eligible to compete for the award again in a different category.
-
Competitors wishing to be considered must indicate this on the registration form and prepare an appropriate piece according to these guidelines:
-
The competition piece must be a piece with orchestral accompaniment.
-
The audition piece must be a concerto movement, concertino, or showpiece with orchestral accompaniment.
-
The piece must not exceed 12 minutes in length.
-
-
It is strongly suggested that the competitor perform with accompaniment during the competition.
Vocalist Guidelines
-
Vocalists should prepare songs which are developmentally appropriate, including art songs in any language, and selections from musicals, operetta, operas, and oratorios. Please note: Pop music and original compositions are not allowed.
Ensemble Guidelines
-
Ensembles must consist of 2-5 performers, all in grades 10-12.
-
The ensemble may include players of the same instrument, varying instruments, or any combination of such, including vocalists.
-
Each ensemble member may enter both individually and as part of an ensemble.
Accompaniment
-
The theater has two fully tuned pianos. One is a baby grand, the other is an upright. Generally, the competitor pianist performs on the baby grand. The presence of two pianos allows for piano concertos, if desired.
-
Any performer who wishes to have piano accompaniment must secure their own accompanist. Compensation for the accompanist must be arranged between the performer's family and the accompanist. Please keep the accompanist informed of the anticipated time of your performance. We urge each performer to rehearse with the selected accompanist well in advance of the competition date.
-
Digital accompaniment (electronic speakers with a digital track) is not permitted.
-
Performers are not required to have piano accompaniment.

WRAC-recommended accompanists
-
Dr. Priyeshni Peiris Perera 959-929-1392
-
Richard Cooper 860-371-0807
Attire
-
Please choose attire that is suitable for performance and does not distract from your presentation as a musician. Do not wear blue jeans, tee shirts, athletic style clothing, or polo shirts.
-
For safety reasons, flip-flops and sandals are not permitted.
-
Preferred attire includes button-down shirts, ties (optional), dresses and blouses with a conservative neckline/hemline. Leggings are acceptable if they are paired with a tunic or dress of mid-thigh length or longer.
-
We appreciate your commitment to these guidelines. Similar or stricter attire requirements will apply at All-State or collegiate-level performances, and this is a great opportunity to become familiar with those standards.
